Hog plums are tropical fruits belonging to the genus Spondias, native to the Americas and widely cultivated across the Caribbean, Central America, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. Their name reflects their historical use as forage for pigs, though humans have long prized them too. Small and oval, they range from yellow to orange when ripe, with tangy, fibrous flesh surrounding a large, spiky pit. Flavor varies by variety from pleasantly sour to mildly sweet. In the Caribbean they are eaten raw with salt and pepper; elsewhere they appear in chutneys, beverages, and pickles. Rich in vitamin C, they have also served traditional medicine for generations.
